Plenary & Partial Indulgences

Ron,

Under what usual conditions are partial and plenary indulgences granted, i.e how does one merit an indulgence?

One can satisfy the punishment due for sin without any conditions, by any type of sincere prayer, self-denial, works of mercy.

The usual conditions for an indulgence are:

1. you must be in a state of grace (so you must have repented from any actual mortal sins and received forgiveness by perfect contrition or by imperfect contrition plus confession)

2.a. plenary indulgences require Confession and Communion within about 20 days or so, plus or minus

2.b. partial indulgences only require at least a contrite heart, but Confession and Communion are recommended

3. a prayer for the intentions of the Pope (any prayer, though one Our Father and one Hail Mary are typical)

4. you must have the intention to obtain the indulgence

5. you must perform what is required for the indulgence (prayers or a visit to a church or whatever it may be)
