I thought these gifts apply only when speaking excathedra - and that the Pope is only infallible in such instance - or this is something totally different? Thank

Papal infallibility only applies to ex cathedra teachings. The gift of truth and of a never-failing faith is given to the person and office of the Pope so that he can never teach material heresy, not even privately, and can never commit apostasy, heresy, or schism at all.
