Default 82% of Catholics?

A new Gallup poll asserts that 82% of Catholics believe that contraception is morally acceptable. But is this number correct? No, it is not.

In my analysis of a previous poll conducted in one diocese, I pointed out that pollsters generally consider someone Catholic if they call themselves Catholic, even if they do not attend Mass, do not believe that Jesus is without sin, and do not base their beliefs about God and morality on Church teaching at all.

So a large percentage of those 82% are not really believing and practicing Catholics. They come from a Catholic background. They call themselves Catholic. But they do not even attempt to believe or live the Catholic Faith.

Even so, it is clear that a large percentage of Catholics have rejected the infallible teaching of the Magisterium on contraception.
