Default Origins of Vices

Ron,

I recently heard a homily by a priest in which he said that vices such as envy originate from the devil. Is this theologically inaccurate?

No. Sin is essentially from free will. The three influences on free will toward sin, in order, are:

1. the flesh -- i.e. concupiscence (our fallen human nature)
2. the world -- society and other sinners
3. the devil -- fallen angels

It is certain that the devil and fallen angels in general are not involved in every sinful choice of the free will. The devil is not as powerful as some preachers make him out to be. He is only one fallen angel. He and all his cohort put together, cannot tempt all human persons at all times. So most sins are not due to the temptation of fallen angels.
