Default Automatic ExCommunication

The Holy Father's recent actions whereby he has authorized all priests to forgive the sins of abortion during the YEAR OF MERCY was a surprise to me. I did not understand the fact that the sin of abortion carries the penalty of automatic excommunication which can only be forgiven and re-instated by a bishop.

Can you explain which sins carry this severe penalty, or which circumstances would cause a person to be automatically excommunicated?

For the penalty to apply, the person has to have known about the church law and the penalty of excommunication at the time the sin was committed. It applies to all who procure an abortion, and to accomplices without whose help the abortion could not have been done.

Most pastors in the U.S. and many other priests have the faculty, delegated by the bishop, to lift the excommunication. Any priest can forgive the sin.

Default other sins which merit automatic excommunication

Thank you for that very clear answer on those sins relating to abortion. Is there a list of other sins or some defined criteria which also carry the penalty of automatic excommunication. Does a person have to know that the penalty for a given act is automatic excommunication in order for the penalty to apply. Is it possible that large numbers of people have automatically excommunicated themselves without knowing it??????

The only sins which carry the penalty of automatic excommunication even if one does not know about the penalty are the sins of apostasy, heresy, and schism. These sins, by their very nature, cause a separation between the sinner and the Church.

Many Catholics are automatically excommunicated, without realizing it, because of one or more of these three sins.
