OK, so the monthly fee will be $12; paid by recurring payment from a PayPal account. If you have decided to be a supporting member, PM me and let me know what your PayPal account e-mail address is, and I'll add you to the list when the supporting memberships begin, probably beginning June 1st. No money will be due until July. July payment is for the month of June; August payment is for the month of July. You only pay for what you have already received.

I do NOT expect most members to become supporting members. I'm doing this on a trial basis, and so if it does not work well, I might go back to the regular system where no one pays.

Supporting members are members just like anyone else; they are not moderators and their posts or opinions have no additional weight.

Membership fees for each calendar month will always be paid after that calendar month has been completed. If a member does not wish to pay the fee for that previous month, they do not have to pay; they can switch to a regular membership or leave the group without owing anything. No money is ever owed by supporting members, and no refunds will ever need to be issued (since you only pay for what you have already received, and only if you wish to pay). If you somehow get behind in paying by several months, you do not have to pay; there will never be any kind of debt or collection of fees other than the voluntary monthly fees that can be stopped at any time by the member. The only recourse that I have if a supporting member does not pay for a month is to return them to a basic membership; there is no debt.

If anyone needs to set up a PayPal account, they can do so here:

https://www.paypal.com/

I'm not sure exactly how the built in paid subscription fuction of the forum software works. I've read that it uses a recurring payment function of PayPal.

Sorry if there are any difficulties or missteps in setting this up, since this is new to me.

If you can't or don't want to use PayPal, don't worry about it. For now I'm only accepting PayPal, but once we are up and running with this system, I might accept other forms of payment.

Default membership - participation

Ron,
i also think that a monthly membership fee is reasonable and a healthy management component for a website's growth and long term life.

PayPal is relatively easy to setup. What i don't remember is if they in turn require an account maintenance fee or minimum balance.

A monthly fee would possibly sensitize its paying members to a greater and more productive participation in the forum.

Yes not a bad idea. Besides, from a financial point of view, there's no such thing as free lunch; specially so in the current financial turmoil.

Thanks

Yes, I agree with Sammy.

I don't use a credit card and I'm working overseas, so I could send you a lump sum by money order via citibank to cover a year if that's okay.

After I have this all set up and am accepting the membership by PayPal, I will try to work out some alternate method of payment.

payments will not start until July of this year.

No, you can only pay for past completed months of supporting membership.
Do you want me to add you as a supporting member?
You don't have to be on automatic payments. You can just pay every month,
or every three months, by manual paypal payments.

If there was a membership fee, I would have to opt out. I'm sorry, but that is how it is now for me. Maybe after the end of the year I could contribute more but right now I'm barely making it.

I want most memberships to be free. Supporting memberships are entirely voluntary and optional. I don't want anyone becoming a supporting member unless they can easily afford it.
