Default Former papal MC

Fr. Z. opines on the former papal MC (master of ceremonies, originally a Catholic term for the person in charge of liturgical form for the pope) --

He is Archbishop Piero Marini. He has now spoken in favor of approval for same-sex unions.

“It is necessary to recognize the union of persons of the same sex, because there are many couples that suffer because their civil rights aren’t recognized. What can’t be recognized is that this union is equivalent to marriage”.

The problem with this approach is that it is simply a two-step process to full approval for same-sex marriage. First, they approve of civil unions, and then later, once such unions are widely accepted in society, they approve of same-sex marriages.

Bishop Marini also made some rather nasty inferences about the reign of Pope Benedict XVI, in the context of praising Pope Francis:

“It’s a breath of fresh air; it’s opening a window onto springtime and onto hope. We had been breathing the waters of a swamp and it had a bad smell. We’d been in a church afraid of everything, with problems such as Vatileaks and the paedophilia scandals. With Francis we’re talking about positive things”. And, “there’s a different air of freedom, a church that’s closer to the poor and less problematic”.

I think ultimately people like Marini are going to be disappointed with Pope Francis. Right now, everyone is projecting onto the new Pope what they want him to be. Once he begins to publish papal documents and make substantial changes to the Curia and perhaps to discipline, many will realize that the Pope decides who he is, not his many commentators.
