Default Repent vs Penance

Matthew 3:2 says:

"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." (RSV)

"Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." (DR)

Which version is more textually accurate? Is the proper reading "repent" or "penance"?

Is there a significant different meaning between the two terms?

Default I may be wrong or off the wall, but I get a different feeling for both terms.

When I think of repent I think of the immediate distaste for and desire to flee from the darkness of our sins. When I think of penance I think of a more long-term continuation and extension of that initial repentance.

We cannot do penance without intially repenting, but we can repent without having yet done any penance.

I can repent for stealing, but penance for stealing would seem to me to be avoiding future situations of temptation for that vice, extending my efforts to be virtuous with regard to respecting others' property, and making amends on many levels to those I have offended, beginning with God, for that vice.

I am sure Ron will correct me if I am way off here.

You are correct. These are two different terms. But doing penance generally implies that you are also repenant, since acts of penance are the fruit of repentance. So I like the Douai wording, which includes both meanings (the one stated and the other implied).
