Default Church teaching on Slavery

Anyone know the earliest time the Church explicitly taught slavery as a moral evil?

I was thinking that the abolitionist movement normally gets attributed to Protestant abolitionists such as William Wilberforce, but I was wondering whether my view of history has been missing out on the Catholic Church's (hopefully positive) influence on the subject.

Does anyone know whether the Church is formally involved in anyway with any of the various "modern-day abolitionist" movements to eradicate sexual slavery in the world today?

Thanks,
-ken

Ken,

I don't know the answer to your question, but you might try looking in the history books by the Carroll's. Anne Carroll wrote Christ the King Lord of History and Christ and the America's. Her husband, Warren Carroll, wrote a five volume set which he was unable to finish because of illness. I believe he died, but I'm not sure. Anyway, they might give you some insights.

Julie

P.S. I'm not sure I spelled the last name right.
