Default Justice

"When the Lord wishes to punish a nation, He first blinds the judges."
(from Scripture)

Is there a difference between vengeance and justice? Is punishment a legitimate component of justice?

Underneath these arguments about abortion, and capital punishment, is not a lot of high minded conflicts but rather, in my opinion, conflicts between those whose ultimate aim is to rationalize and intellectualize Hedonism, and those who believe and live by moral absolutes.

The value and dignity of individual human beings, respect for life, has been devalued in the slow course of decades, in Western (or, Judeo-Christian) society. The devaluation can be traced, as the Catholic Church forewarned, and has documented, with the arrival of the sexual revolution and the legitimization of Hedonism. Hedonism, the worship and pursuit of pleasure, does not mean only sexual pleasure, or gluttony--it can be any narcissistic quest, including forms of excellence and accomplishment. Brilliance and attainment are amoral, becoming immoral when unmoored from restraining bonds of conscience.

One who embraces the beliefs and practices of Hedonism must of necessity end in sacrificing Justice, because Hedonism demands tolerance of pleasure seeking in others to the exclusion of other social attitudes. If another's pleasure is censured as evil, then my own pleasure seeking might at some point be censured in the same way. Therefore, extreme tolerance is the mandatory virtue that safeguards the actual practices of the hedonist, along with the shared sensibilities of relativism and collective accountability.

Hedonism always ends in murder when it prevails in a culture, as malignant tumors end in death if not destroyed. From that triumph of hedonism arises predatory hedonism--and the intellectualizing and denial of sin.

The Hedonists and their cunning allies, see elevating the pursuit of pleasure as an end in itself or even as a means to the ultimate end of seizing power from the shattered remains of social structures (anarchists destroy from lust and pride; deconstructionists destroy as a necessary step to gaining power).

Hedonistic society ends by necessity at secular humanism and an ethics of moral relativism with social conditioning for a collective identity. Having arrived there, whoever controls the spiggots of pleasure controls the society, and once in control, with resistance outnumbered and demoralized, with deconstructed populations at their disposal, the ruling powers can harness the energies and assets of an entire society to the yoke of the state, servitors to sustain the elite cadres according to whatever scheme or necessity may present.

Here is the nub of it: When people will no longer control themselves, they must be controlled from outside themselves. Whether we look at the Fall of Rome or the Weimar Republic, tyranny follows when Hedonism has played out its ruinous debauch of a culture.

Two Cases to Illustrate the Death of Justice, Cult of Tolerance and the Triumph of Murderous Hedonism:

1) Those who helped the pedophile murderer of Jessica Lunsford by concealing him, by turning a blind eye to whatever was going on in that tiny trailer where they all lived and caroused together--these swine are not even charged with a crime. Jessica's murderer had assaulted many, many children and he was always released because of the Cult of Tolerance, the Triumph of Hedonism, the delusion of therapeutic malleability and moral relativism.

Our society has rendered itself incapable of self defense, calloused to evil, so deluded and self-deceived by the folly of moral relativism, that we do not effectively incarcerate, control, track or restrain such people.

We spare their lives not from reverence for life or respect for human dignity--those considerations NEVER invoked for little Jessica, by the way, who in Justice ought to be the recipient of such values. No, we spare human monsters and release them to indulge their Caligulan appetites through base self interest. We are guarding the god of Pleasure with the sword of Tolerance. We do not fulfill our duty to pass on a decent, livable society to our children because of indolence, moral preening, intellectual arrogance, willful blindness, collective cowardice.
2) People, media people, people on the street--are actually excusing Astronaut Nowak because she's an astronaut. They're inventing a syndrome to protect her! "Post Shuttle Syndrome."

The Cult of Tolerance is rationalizing her horrifying and obvious intention to kidnap, torture and murder her rival in an adulterous sexual obsession. This stunning triumph of therapeutic rationalizing of evil has totally devalued the life of her victim, the victim she stalked and assualted. Commenters and the people are actually discounting the knife, the ligatures, the garbage bags, the steel mallet, the pneumatic-power beebee gun, instruments that are damning evidence of hellish intention. Clearly these were preparations needed to coerce, subdue, torment and debase--and then carry out--murder.

Tolerance for Evil is the Protector of Hedonism
Hedonism Murders Justice by Fostering Tolerance for Evil
The Murder of Justice Paves the Road to Tyranny

So, like Orwell's nightmare of 2 + 2 = 5 in "1984" or, Huxley's nightmare realm of designer subhumans and decanted workerbees stoned and dead with pleasures of the flesh in "Brave New World" the equation for arriving at Utopia must always involve cancelling moral absolutes, embracing collective identity, destroying respect for individual rights and a conscience sensitized to moral absolutes.

"Things fall apart, the center cannot hold/ mere anarchy is loosed upon the world," leading to imposition of some form of tyranny, and ending in Yeats odd and chilling poetry, "some beast slouches its way to Bethlehem to be born."

Cool

Hedonism, certainly is a false God, as I suppose it has always been. But I wonder if thats the underlying principle behind much that we do in the West? The main reason for creating a false God I suspect is to create order or meaning out of chaos. I suspect in the West we have tried create this order through control freakery and social engineering, through trying to create through social engineering and media manipulation an illusionary Utopia which will shield us from the essential chaos that living in a fallen world will confront us with. Thus there is no sin, there are simply good choices and bad choices and if we as a society and individuals make the 'right' choices' we will be saved.

However underlying this fairy tale Utopia certain truths confront us. We are all going to get old...if we live long enough to get that far. We're all going to die. We're all, unless we die suddenly....going to get ill, its highly probable we may endure great pain. We are all at some time or other feel lonely, feel hurt, feel bereavement. Yet I think much of the philosophy is about patching over the cracks to stop the existential water getting in, to stop the illusory boat from sinking.

Of all religions of all faiths Christianity is superb in this that it confronts the problem of pain and suffering directly and far from ignoring, denying or sublimating it, suffering is seen as Salvific and Redemptive.

I think thats why Gods getting ready to kick the box over; because we were getting cosy in a Godless box, God is the God of surprises and is driving us out of the false Garden of Eden into chaos. Chaos that only forms meaning in Christ.

Punishment is a legitimate part of justice, as is clear from the existence of Hell.

It is also a legitimate part of justice administered by worldly authority.

Yes, but how often the 'justice', like the 'love' that we see in this life deeply flawed.

For true justice I think we'll have to wait for a better life than this one.

Is this the same Hedonistic society that will be the judge of equal "justice" in our society? Punishment is a legitimate part of justice as you state but I fear we live in a society that cannot render something that is alien to the value of human life and diginity.

Yes, the current secularized society is not very good at dispensing justice. But the civil authorities do have the right to administer justice and to inflict punishment (though that right is presently often misused).
