{2:1} And so I beg you, first of all, to make supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings for all men,
{2:2} for kings, and for all who are in high places, so that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all piety and chastity.

Paul has authority, but he acts like a servant. These kings and persons with power and authority ('in high places') were generally not Christians, and were very sinful. And yet we should pray for them, not only because they are sinners, but because they have authority. We pray for all human persons, and we give thanks for any and all good that comes from any of our fellow human beings.

Notice the emphasis on chastity and piety, in contrast to the exaltation of sexuality found in secular society and secular Catholics.

{2:3} For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,
{2:4} who wants all men to be saved and to arrive at an acknowledgment of the truth.

This verse refutes the claim of Calvinists and certain heretical Catholics that God chooses not to save certain persons.

{2:5} For there is one God, and one mediator of God and of men, the man Christ Jesus,
{2:6} who gave himself as a redemption for all, as a testimony in its proper time.

This verse refutes the claim of certain heretical Catholics who promote Mary as a co-Redeemer, co-Mediator, and co-Advocate -- as if she had the same role as Christ, despite the clear assertion of Scripture that Christ is the sole Mediator. Instead, Mary's role is to assist Christ in Christ's work as Redeemer, Mediator, Advocate. He is our redemption. She immerses herself in worship of Him -- a truth ignored by these heretics -- so as to be His assistant in all the He does for our salvation.

{2:7} Of this testimony, I have been appointed a preacher and an Apostle, (I speak the truth, I do not lie) as a teacher of the Gentiles, in faith and in truth.

Paul was appointed by God to be an Apostle. He was also appointed by Peter to be the Patriarch to the Gentiles.

{2:8} Therefore, I want men to pray in every place, lifting up pure hands, without anger or dissension.

First, he speaks about the role of men in prayer, so that we will know that men and women have different roles in the Church. Then he refers to the role of women.

{2:9} Similarly also, women should be dressed fittingly, adorning themselves with compunction and restraint, and not with plaited hair, nor gold, nor pearls, nor costly attire,
{2:10} but in a manner proper for women who are professing piety by means of good works.

Paul gives examples (plaited hair, gold, pearls, etc.) not to forbid these particular things, but to illustrate the principle of simplicity and humility in adornment. Notice that he says women should adorn themselves, but not with vanity or excessive cost. The exterior adornment has a certain place, but the interior adornment is by piety and good works.

{2:11} Let a woman learn in silence with all subjection.
{2:12} For I do not permit a woman to teach, nor to be in authority over a man, but to be in silence.

These are the word of the Holy Spirit to the Church. We cannot dismiss these words by saying that Paul had a bias, or that Paul expressed an error common in his society or culture. All of Sacred Scripture is Christ speaking to us. Of course, the silence spoken of here is not literal; anyone who is learning will ask questions and will express his or her understanding as the learning progresses. The silence is a figure indicating a difference in role, indicating subjection. For we are all subject to Christ, and within the body of Christ there are different types of subjection, so that each person has his or her own place.

Women should not have positions of formal teaching, leadership, or authority over adult men. A woman might teach by example, or by necessity in a particular circumstance (ad hoc). But women generally should not have positions of teaching, leadership or authority over men.

In the roles given to men and women, the man represents Christ and the woman repesents the Church. Does the Church have the role of teaching Christ, or of leading Christ, or of being in authority over Christ? Not at all. Similarly, the division of humanity into male and female also represents the division of all that exists into God and Creation. God is the head of Creation, just as Christ is the head of the Church. When a woman takes a role of teaching, leadership, or authority over adult men, God is offended because it is a type of rebellion against the order that God chose for humanity, and because it is a figurative rebellion of Creation against God.

{2:13} For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
{2:14} And Adam was not seduced, but the woman, having been seduced, was in transgression.

Eve sinned first. Only later did Adam sin. This passage refutes the absurd fairytale proposed by Scott Hahn, saying that Adam sinned first by refusing to protect his wife from a dragon. This passage also refutes the tendency of secular Catholics to exhonorate the woman and place all blame on the man, in various ways. Furthermore, since Adam and Eve did not sin at the same time, the sin of the Fall was not sexual relations.

The serpent represents the devil, who tempted Eve because his own sin was rebellion against the order that God placed in Creation. Satan and his followers refused to worship Christ as God made man, rebelling against God's plan and against God. So Satan attempted to repeat this rebellion by causing Eve, who was subordinate to Adam, to rebel against the order God placed in humanity.

{2:15} Yet she will be saved by bearing children, if she has continued in faith and love, and in sanctification accompanied by self-restraint.

The bearing and raising of children is one of the most important contributions that women make to humanity, particularly as women. They also make important contributions in ways similar to men, such as in prayer, self-denial, and good works. But particularly as women, child-bearing is their most important feminine role. This truth is in contradiction to the teachings of secular society and secularized Catholics, who separate sex from procreation, and who consider sex to be so much greater than child-bearing. It is as if they think women's greatest contribution as women is to be sex-symbols or sex-objects.

Instead, Scripture teaches the importance of procreation, and of virtues and self-restraint. This teaching contradicts the heretical errors of the false version of theology of the body, which teaches little or no restraint in sexuality within marriage, and which exalts sexual pleasure (paying only lip service to procreation).
