Default gender roles

The true theology of the body is not solely, or even mainly, about sex. It is about the human being as a soul and a body, united thoroughly as one person, such that body is significant to the works of the soul. But the soul must always be given the highest place.

The true theology of the body should consider:

1. the effects of the Fall from grace on soul and body, and on their work together.

2. the proper order in life such that spiritual good are greater than bodily goods, but bodily goods are given their proper place in the scale of values

3. works of mercy toward the bodily needs of others, while at the same time respecting and incorporating their spiritual needs

4. the difficulties of chastity for the fallen human person, in a fallen world.

5. the proper place of sex and sexuality in the scale of values, such that spiritual goods are given the higher place

6. sexual ethics, including topics such as marital sexual ethics, modest dress and behavior, and the virtues which aid us in avoiding sin.

7. gender roles: difference in roles, dress, and behavior for men and women. The masculinity and femininity inherent to the human person has its source in the body, but is of the whole person. Therefore, the differences in roles that God intends for men and women in the Church, the family, and society are fundamental and pervasive, not superficial and uncommon.
