Default 2 Kings 24:8

Ron,

i read haydock commentary on 2 Kings 24:8 and 2Chronicles 36:9
What is the correct translation on this?

{24:8} Joachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem: the name of his mother was Nohesta, the daughter of Elnathan, of Jerusalem.
{36:9} Joachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.

quote:
Ver. 9. Eight years old. He was associated by his father to the kingdom, when he was but eight years old; but after his father's death, when he reigned alone, he was eighteen years old, 4 Kings xxiv. 8. (Challoner) --- He only enjoyed the throne three months and ten days. (Tirinus) --- We must however observe, (Haydock) that the Alexandrian Septuagint, the Syriac, and Arabic read here, eighteen. (Calmet) --- "It is, in my opinion, a pity that the translators have not mended such apparent errata of the scribe of the present Hebrew out of 2 Kings xxiv. 8., or out of Septuagint, or out of common sense." (Wall) (Kennicott) --- These eight years may be dated from the captivity, and not from the king's birth. (Usher) (Du Hamel)

My catholic Bible has this commentary.

The destruction of the kingdom of Judah takes place in two stages:
598B.C. - Jehoiakim has just died. His son, Jehoiachin surrenders in the city under siege. First exile of the elite to the Babylon. The Chaldeans( people of babylon) force Zebediah to be the king.
587 B.C. - Zebediah rebels against the Chaldeans who come to destroy Jerusalem and its temple. Second exile to Babylon.

2 Kings 24:8
Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he succeeded his father, and he reigned for three months in Jerusalem. His mother was Nehushta, daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem.

2 Chronicles 36: 9
Jehoiakim was eightyears old when he became King and he reigned for three months and ten days in Jerusalem.

In textual cases such as this, I think the text is to be accepted and some explanation is to be sought. The most probable explanation is that there are two different ways of counting the start of his reign, as the first note you quote says.

I don't agree with the note that says 'common sense' should correct the text, because the Word of God often contains obscurities, things that are not immediately clear as to the meaning. In the way God encourages us to look deeper into the meaning of very passage.

Perhaps the explanation is like that of this verse:

[1 Samuel 13]
{13:1} When he began to reign, Saul was the son of one year, and he reigned over Israel for two years.

which counts the start of Saul's reign one year from the event in his adult life when he was given a new heart by God (his conversion). So perhaps Joachin had a conversion (in this case to evil) when he was 10 (so a few years beyond the age of reason) and he began to reign when he was 18, 8 years from that time.
