Default "US nuns won't 'compromise mission'"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-19218870

"Sister Pat Farrell, the group's leader, said they would continue discussions with the bishops "as long as possible, but will reconsider if LCWR is forced to compromise the integrity of its mission".

The board will first meet with Seattle Archbishop Peter Sartain, to begin what is said to be a five year process.

"Dialogue on doctrine is not going to be our starting point," Sister Farrell said. "Our starting point will be about our own life and about our understanding of religious life.""

This article from the old Catholic Encyclopedia talks about that distinction:

"As regards their juridical condition, we distinguish (a) nuns properly so-called, having solemn vows with papal enclosure, whose homes are monasteries; (b) nuns belonging to the old approved orders with solemn vows, but taking only simple vows by special dispensation of the Holy See; (c) sisters with simple vows dependent on the Holy See; (d) sisters under diocesan government."

However, it is much more common today to use the terms sister and nun interchangeably.
