Ken,

I do believe Bl. A.C.Emmerich states that Mary's older sister is named Mary. If memory serves me correctly, St. Anne was actually married 3 times. So she is a half sister in reality. Maybe someone can can verify this. Of course, the Virgin Mary had an Immaculate Conception which Bl. Emmerich goes into also.

But I have been pondering lately the issue of so many Marys. Why are all those so close to Jesus and present at His crucification named Mary? It seems that the name Mary has a significance that goes beyond our earthly realm but I can't quite figure out what it is or what the symbolism of it is. It almost seems like when reading the Bible you cannot decipher all the Mary's and how they relate to each other for a reason. Does anyone else feel this way?

Ken,

Here is a genealogical table I made about Jesus' family according to Emmerich's visions.. It' similar to Emmerich's but more expanded.

the Virgin Mary's older sister is a full sister, the child of Joachim and Anna.

Wow, I can believe a god-man rose from the dead, but I have a hard time believing parents would name two of their children the same first name. Good thing there hasn't been an infallible declaration on this point yet...

I think that they did not have the same name; it is probably a translation issue. Maybe one name was maria and the other name was mary, or something similar: basically two different names that end up being translated both as mary.

Hello Ron, Thank you for explaining about the provisions in OT law for marriage to a perpetual virgin, I did not know that, and this helps me to understand this part of the gospel much better. Regards, Therese.
