Default Matthew 5

{5:3} “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
{5:4} Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the earth.
{5:5} Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be consoled.
{5:6} Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied.
{5:7} Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
{5:8} Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
{5:9} Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
{5:10} Blessed are those who endure persecution for the sake of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
{5:11} Blessed are you when they have slandered you, and persecuted you, and spoken all kinds of evil against you, falsely, for my sake:
{5:12} be glad and exult, for your reward in heaven is plentiful. For so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

I'll let the members comment on the Beatitudes (above). Choose one or two beatitudes and give your meditation on what it means to the Christian today.

{5:13} You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, with what will it be salted? It is no longer useful at all, except to be cast out and trampled under by men.

The last part of this verse refers to Hell. If a person loses their state of grace, and if they die without repenting, then they are no longer fit for heaven or even purgatory; they are only fit for Hell.

{5:17} Do not think that I have come to loosen the law or the prophets. I have not come to loosen, but to fulfill.
{5:18} Amen I say to you, certainly, until heaven and earth pass away, not one iota, not one dot shall pass away from the law, until all is done.
{5:19} Therefore, whoever will have loosened one of the least of these commandments, and have taught men so, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever will have done and taught these, such a one shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

So very many Catholics today, and many theologians, and many religious and priests, are willing to loosen the teachings of Christ to accomodate the views of modern society. Such is not the Way of Christ.

{5:21} You have heard that it was said to the ancients: ‘You shall not murder; whoever will have murdered shall be liable to judgment.’
{5:22} But I say to you, that anyone who becomes angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment. But whoever will have called his brother, ‘Idiot,’ shall be liable to the council. Then, whoever will have called him, ‘Worthless,’ shall be liable to the fires of Hell.

If you are accused of murder because you have killed someone, then you are liable to judgment as to whether or not the killing was justified or was murder. Similarly, if you are angry at someone, you are liable to judgment as to whether or not that anger is justified. Christ does not here condemn all killing, or all anger. The same is true of negative statements about other persons; these are subject to judgment as to whether or not the statements are justified. A person does not necessarily go to Hell for saying negative statements about someone, since these statements may be true. But even an interior sin can be sufficiently grave to deserve hellfire.

{5:28} But I say to you, that anyone who will have looked at a woman, so as to lust after her, has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

The interior sins can be just as serious as the exterior sins.

Lust is a sin, even if a husband has lust toward his wife.

{5:29} And if your right eye causes you to sin, root it out and cast it away from you. For it is better for you that one of your members perish, than that your whole body be cast into Hell.

This verse condemns pornography.

{5:30} And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it away from you. For it is better for you that one of your members perish, than that your whole body go into Hell.

This verse condemns masturbation.

{5:32} But I say to you, that anyone who will have dismissed his wife, except in the case of fornication, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever will have married her who has been dismissed commits adultery.

Divorce is permitted only in cases of grave necessity, such as if one spouse is continually unfaithful, or immersed in unrepentant daily grave sins, or represents a threat to the safety of the other spouse or the children. Even in such cases, the bond of the Sacrament remains, so the spouses cannot remarry. Divorce and remarriage is not permissible.

{5:44} But I say to you: Love your enemies....

{5:3} “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

I think 'poor in spirit' means persons who do not seek earthy riches or recognition from this world or fame regardless of his/her good deeds of the position God has given them in this life. If these people have something of this world, they live as if they don't have that something. These are people who seek spiritual riches and recognition from God only and, therefore, live following the example of the Holy Family.

5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied. The Catholic Christians held in prisons today across Asia for practicing their faith.
5:10 Blessed are those who endure persecution for the sake of justice, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. The aborted children forsaken by the governing justice of man.

Default Blessed are the Peacemakers

{5:9} Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Today we live in the "Me" generation. It seems that everyone has a personal agenda for self gratification, and many people are seeking the same rewards. There seems to be conflict everywhere - In our families - In our schools - In our Churches - In our Nations - In our Societies. Those who have no agenda except to reconcile the conflicts that we encounter everywhere will be greatly appreciated by their peers and by God.

5:26 Amen I say to you, that you shall not go forth from there, until you have repaid the last quarter.
This speaks of Purgatory. Although debt can also be repaid in Hell so that suffering is diminished, there is no complete going forth from there.

Which of us doesn't fit into verse 5:11 today, either as individuals or as a corporate Christian body? Even if we can somehow escape ridicule for our beliefs as individuals, (sometimes from other Catholics!), we are mocked and scorned as a group on every television and in every newspaper and magazine. Sometimes it's very painful, but I'm trying to keep my eyes fixed on the finish line.

I've heard 5:29 explained as coverting your neighbors goods and 5:30 directed against stealing.

Not disagreeing, just commenting.

A verse can have more than one meaning intended by God.

Got confused here , Ron, what is the definitive meaning of lust? So what is the alternative word for a husband who want to have "it" with his wife?

Lust is not merely sexual desire, but rather consented desire for illicit sexual acts. A husband could have lust for his wife in the sense of wanting sexual pleasure without caring if it is from his wife or not, treating her as a sexual object, rather than as a person, or desiring illicit sexual acts with his wife (i.e. unnatural sexual acts).

Thus, Christ calls lust 'adultery of the heart' indicating that lust is interior consent to illicit sexual acts, such as adultery, but also any gravely immoral sexual act.
