Default Jewish belief

I have recently met one of my Jewish neighbors who works in a Synagogue and have spoken with him about Faith, with the purpose of finding out what they really believe in at this point in time. Well he
told me that the Jewish believe in reincarnation. Can someone add
anything to this, where in Scripture can they pick such a discredited

The ancient Jews gradually developed a better understanding of the afterlife, culminating in the books of Maccabbees with prayers for the dead (implying the existance of Purgatory).
